CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) -School districts across the country spent much of their summer break re-examining their safety measures and security plans, in the wake of the devastating shooting in Uvlade, Texas. The newest trend in school security, is artificial intelligence. Iterate.ai is applying the same kind tech that helps track down criminals with license plate and face recognition, to detect weapons on people who are approaching a school. Iterate founder Brian Santhianathan says they trained their platform in a large catalog of weapons, using 25,000 images. "We have also trained it to detect knives, sharp objects and things like Kevlar vests. We have also trained it to detect masks, both robbery masks and medical masks," he said.

New York City may be rolling out new technology and periodic bag checks to prevent future terrorist attacks, according to the mayor. New York City Mayor Eric Adams spoke with MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Wednesday about the previous day's terror attack on the city's subway system. The mayor touched on the possibility of new technology on public transportation to prevent similar acts in the future. "With the gun detection devices – oftentimes when people hear of'metal detectors,' they immediately think of the airport model," Adams said.

Canada's busiest airport will soon be using artificial intelligence-powered technology to detect weapons. The operator of Toronto's Pearson International Airport says it has agreed to test the new system developed at an Ivy League American university and marketed by a B.C. company. Vancouver-based Liberty Defense Holdings Ltd. says the technology, known as Hexwave, can detect both metallic and non-metallic weapons ranging from guns and knives to explosives. It operates by capturing radar images, then using artificial intelligence to analyze those images for signs of a weapon concealed in bags or under clothing. Liberty says the technology is not able to recognize facial features and therefore does not pose a privacy risk, a position experts in the field view with some skepticism.

Paul Hildreth peered at a display of dozens of images from security cameras surveying his Atlanta school district and settled on one showing a woman in a bright yellow shirt walking a hallway. A mouse click instructed the artificial intelligence-equipped system to find other images of the woman, and it immediately stitched them into a video narrative of where she was currently, where she had been and where she was going. There was no threat, but Hildreth's demonstration showed what's possible with AI-powered cameras. If a gunman were in one of his schools, the cameras could quickly identify the shooter's location and movements, allowing police to end the threat as soon as possible, said Hildreth, emergency operations coordinator for the Fulton County School District. AI is transforming surveillance cameras from passive sentries into active observers that can identify people, suspicious behavior and guns, amassing large amounts of data that help them learn over time to recognize mannerisms, gait and dress.
